What comes to mind when you mention Greece?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The picture-perfect island of Santorini? The packed summer beaches of Mykonos? Or the temples and monuments of Athens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But look at a map of this huge nation of islands, and you\u2019ll notice one glaring omission \u2013 it\u2019s huge northern mainland!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being famed for its islands \u2013 something that has unfortunately led to overtourism <\/a>\u2013 northern Greece is frequently overlooked by most travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what a shame, because it has some of its most jaw-dropping sights, particularly during autumn, when fiery pines, golden oaks and rust-red beeches make their grand entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a walk into the peaks, rivers and lakes of northern Greece \u2013 autumn-style!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pindos & Vikos-Aoos National Parks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in the far northwestern region of Epirus, Pindos and Vikos-Aoos are the twin geological wonders of Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pindos <\/strong>or the Northern Pindos National Park<\/strong> is a huge swathe of forested valleys that shelters a vast variety of species such as bear, birds and otters. Known as one of Greece\u2019s coldest areas, it hosts stunning shades of green, gold and brown during the fall months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other half of Pindos is Vikos-Aoos<\/strong> – a UNESCO-recognized geopark that boasts spectacularly sheer cliffs and unbelievably breathtaking gorges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
