Akihabara is frequently touted as Tokyo\u2019s premiere pop culture shopping stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But honestly, it\u2019s very uh, testosterone fuelled if you get what I mean. Its overwhelming amount of female characters and dozens of maid cafes say it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what\u2019s a female otaku or fan of Japanese pop culture (who\u2019s into guys) to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simple, you head west, to the land called Ikebukuro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Ikebukuro Intro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Literally called \u201cbag of ponds\u201d in Japanese, Ikebukuro is a bubbling commercial and shopping haven that caters to both everyday shoppers and pop culture fanatics of anime and manga, not to mention traditional idols and celebs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For otaku shoppers, Ikebukuro has two major areas of interest: the area to the east of Ikebukuro Station and a \u201cstreet\u201d further east nicknamed Otome Road (Ladies\u2019 Road).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, without further ado, let\u2019s explore Ikebukuro and its otaku offerings!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most of Tokyo, Ikebukuro is a city oriented around its massive Ikebukuro Station, with its chunky rectangular fa\u00e7ade bisecting the district into east and west. For our purposes, most of the shopping and otaku interests lie in east Ikebukuro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, you don\u2019t even need to walk far for your first otaku stop – Ikebukuro PARCO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before leaving the station, go to the north exit and say hi to the <\/em>owl <\/em>statue and local celebrity <\/em>cheekily named Ike-fukurou (fukurou being the Japanese word for owl).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located north of Ikebukuro Station, Ikebukuro PARCO<\/strong> is a shiny off-white building with a tasteful fa\u00e7ade that looks like your average upscale luxury mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But dig a little deeper and you\u2019ll find a hub for plenty of geeky goods featuring dedicated franchise stores and pop-up stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the 2F basement, there\u2019s the Capcom Store, (Shonen) Jump Shop, Star Wars Special Store and Chiikawarando<\/strong> (yes, that<\/em> Chiikawa<\/a>). Meanwhile, on the sixth floor, an Evangelion Store<\/strong>, a newly opened BanG Dream Store<\/strong> and assorted pop culture goods vendors await.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
