Ever since the first football flew into the back of the net, the beautiful game has drawn ever larger crowds, creating the need for large stadiums. From a simple pitch with stands to mega-stadiums sitting thousands, stadiums have become closely linked with football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the world holds its breath for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup final, let\u2019s take a look at the world\u2019s most famous football stadiums alongside their gorgeous architecture, momentous matches and the great cities that host them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estadio Gran Parque Central, Uruguay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Where better to start a FIFA football stadium list than with the first FIFA stadium of Estadio Gran Parque Central?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was here, in the coastal capital of Montevideo,  where one of two opening matches for the very first FIFA World Cup in 1930 was organized between the United States and Belgium (3-0). The second match between France and Mexico (4-1) was held at the now demolished Estadio Pocitos, with Lucien Laurent scoring the first ever World Cup goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Built with an old-school flair, its single pitch is surrounded on all four sides by giant multi-story stands overlooked by the open sky, quite unlike the bowls or domes you see in the modern era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the home club Nacional isn\u2019t hosting a match, you can head south to the Parque Batlle park quarter and gawk at its four<\/em> sports venues and football museum. In fact, one of these venues is the Estadio Centenario, which held many of FIFA 1930\u2019s matches and the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its Gran Parque Central\u2019s location and bus infrastructure, you can also easily visit nearby attractions like Plaza Independencia and its colonial heritage or simply great views at Pocitos Beach. Patagonia and its majestic wilds<\/a> are just next door in Argentina and Chile too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wembley Stadium, UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Instantly recognizable by its large arch, Wembley Stadium is the UK\u2019s largest stadium and the site of the 1966 World Cup final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, maybe not at the current Wembley and its arch, but the old Wembley with its twin towers. But still!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renovated and completed in 2007, the stadium is the current home of the English national team and venue for the domestic Football Association cup finals. That\u2019s in addition to hosting UEFA Champions League, Olympic Games and Rugby Football League matches. Legendary acts like Queen, Genesis, Foo Fighters and Adele have also played at both the old and new Wembley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides its iconic arch, Wembley also features a retractable roof that can let more sunlight in for pitch grass growth. Sadly, for the 90,000 possible attendees \u2013 the second largest seat capacity in Europe \u2013 its roof only partially covers the arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the stands, Wembley\u2019s location in northwest London gives you easy access to tons of parks like Barham Park or King Edward VII Park. There\u2019re also food, shopping and entertainment like the Mundo Pixar Experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you\u2019re willing to take a 1-hour bus down south, you can even visit one of Europe\u2019s famous gardens \u2013 the Kew Gardens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camp Nou, Spain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Built in sunny Barcelona, Camp Nou is the home of European powerhouse FC Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, this huge bowl of a stadium with a is emblazoned with the red, blue and yellow colours of the club alongside their eternal motto \u201cM\u00e9s que un club\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soaring up to 48m and boasting the largest (planned) seating capacity in Europe at 105,000 fans, it\u2019s no wonder the Camp has played host to dozens of  Champions league finals and various 1982 World Cup matches, particularly the opening match . Similarly, superstars like Michael Jackson and U2 have also graced their grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, since its renovation is still awaiting completion in 2027, why not take the time to explore one of Europe\u2019s greatest cities?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just north of Camp Nou, there\u2019s the lovely gardens of the Pedralbes Palace and the magnificent architecture of the G\u00fcell Pavilions. To the northeast, there\u2019s also the Gaudi masterpiece of Casa Mil\u00e0 and world-famous spires of Sagrada Familia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estadio Azteca, Mexico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Team: Club Am\u00e9rica, Cruz Azul, Mexico<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although playing host to the 2026 World Cup kick-off, Mexico\u2019s Estadio Azteca may not be a household name like most others on this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this very stadium holds the record for most World Cup matches, most opening matches and<\/em> most finals hosted. Not only that, in 2026, it\u2019ll also have the honour of being the only stadium to host three World Cups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AND on top of that, it was at this very pitch where the legendary Diego Maradona scored his infamous Hand of God goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, it isn\u2019t lacking in star power either, with Elton John, U2 and Bad Bunny performing sold-out concerts here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the stadium gates, Mexico City is a hotbed of Aztec and Spanish heritage, as can be seen with the massive, mysterious base of the Cuicuilco Pyramid, the colonial-flavoured avenues of Centro De Tlalpan or the stark stone facades of Museo Anahuacalli. If that\u2019s all too far, the massive Gran Sur shopping mall nearby works too! Thrift hunters might be more interested in local haunts like Amcorp Mall<\/a> though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MetLife Stadium, USA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Finally, we come to the last stadium on our list. For good reason too, as it will be the venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on July 20. It\u2019s not famous yet among FIFA stadiums, but it will be soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confusingly named New York New Jersey Stadium despite not being anywhere near either (thanks FIFA), the MetLife Stadium is known locally more for American football and wrestling, hosting both the Super Bowl and WWE events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even before FIFA came knocking, the stadium has also hosted plenty of actual <\/em>football, or soccer as they call it stateside. CONCACAF, FIFA Club World Cup and the Copa America are some of the major superstar leagues that have played on its turf. That\u2019s not even mentioning celebrities that have played here like Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, with this stadium being located far away from New York\u2019s – or rather Manhattan\u2019s – dense subway and public transport system, there isn\u2019t really much to do around here if you don\u2019t have a car or taxi. The sea of parking lots outside doesn\u2019t help either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s an American Dream mall with Nickelodeon, DreamWorks and Lego theme parks down south, plus an aquarium. But if you really want to see the Big Apple proper, you\u2019re gonna have to bus or Uber it to Manhattan, where you\u2019ll see all the world-famous sights like Central Park, Broadway and Chinatown. Heck, try coming back in spring for some pretty US cherry blossoms<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
