But stop looking at the depressed ringgit-dollar rates for a bit, because there\u2019s still plenty of exotic and fascinating destinations right in our neighbourhood (and beyond) that allow you to stretch your ringgit further!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some of the of the most wallet-friendly, budget-conscious and visit-worthy destinations for the thrifty Malaysian traveller:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our neighbour and classic getaway-Thailand-is still an economical yet popular choice for budget-stretchers thanks to its cheap food, wide choice of accommodation along with cultural and natural beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the exchange rates have not been kind to the ringgit, there\u2019s still plenty to see even on a shoestring budget, from the temples and palaces of Chiang Mai to the chill seas and shores of Krabi and especially<\/em> the night markets offering great food and deals in every major town or city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just make sure to pick the right hotels and steer clear of tourist traps like Phuket and Bangkok in the high season and you\u2019ll probably make it through with your wallet and comfort relatively unscathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located right in the middle of the Coral Triangle, the Philippines boasts thousands of islands with drop-dead gorgeous sands and crystal-clear teal waters dotted everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But best of all, this is all easily affordable for the thrifty Malaysian traveller! Backpackers will be spoilt for choice with its many hostels, scuba divers will enjoy the cheap diving gear rental rates and affordable ferries ply routes to almost any island.<\/p>\n\n\n

For divers, Puerto Galera offers diving experiences that accommodate all levels to rich coral sites teeming with life. Meanwhile, for beaches, give a pass to Boracay and head instead to quiet gems in Bitaog Beach and Borawan Island, where all paradise and no crowds await.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet another one of our immediate neighbours, Indonesia is a paradise to Malaysians looking to get the biggest bang out of their buck (or ringgit), particularly for those who love the great outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, you can trek through the volcanic plateaus or peaks of Mount Bromo or Mount Batur, take a dip underneath the Dua Warna Waterfall or chillout next to some of the most beautiful beaches in the region (skip Bali, try Ngitun Beach or Kakaban Island).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia even has something for foodies, with local versions of Malaysian classics like rendang or nasi lemak, or more unique fare such as Nasi Rawon or pempek fishcakes. The good news is that you can get them for cheap in warung<\/em> stalls or simple hole-in-the-wall shops!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skipping across a few oceans, the history-lover will no doubt find themselves attracted to the historical bridge between East and West\u2015Turkey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What many probably won\u2019t know is that Turkey is also a wonderful compromise between barebones and luxury travel, the sweet spot for the budget-minded visitor from Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is especially true when you consider that the ringgit is in an unbelievably strong position against the Turkish lira (as of April 2024), allowing you to get mid-range or even entry-luxury travel without hurting your wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n

And if you\u2019re a history buff, you\u2019ll definitely want to visit Turkey at least once. With its Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman influences, Turkey is an ancient land dripping with affordable and accessible history!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the headline names such as the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque to more ancient and obscure discoveries like Ephesus and G\u00f6beklitepe, you\u2019ll never have a dull moment walking through the echoes of the past!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking for an affordable escapade to a land of stunning seaside views and religious beauty from both Hindu and Buddhist religions? Look no further than Sri Lanka!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This massive island right off to the coast of India is frequently overlooked by most travellers for the neighbouring Maldives, but it is a highly appealing budget choice thanks to its favorable exchange rate for Malaysians and relatively short travel time from Malaysian airports, taking at most three and a half hours from KLIA.<\/p>\n\n\n

Though not as developed as Thailand when it comes to tourist infrastructure, this just means more unspoiled and overdeveloped sights for the deal-seeking Malaysian to enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breathtaking mountains and sweeping rice terraces to the north, the classical capitals of the central regions and the flourishing cities of the south, all enveloped in expansive coastline and beaches\u2015Vietnam is filled with attractions for visitors of any stripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exchange rate doesn\u2019t really bode well for Malaysian tourists, but Vietnam more than makes up for it with super affordable accommodation, buses and trains. Oh, and don\u2019t forget the patron saint of Southeast Asian food\u2015street food!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
