Stroll down any street in central Vienna<\/a>, and there\u2019s a high chance you\u2019ll walk past a good old Viennese coffeehouse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically lined with wooden, spacious furnishings along with marble tabletops and counters, these cafes offer exquisite coffee blends, delicious desserts and most of all \u2013 a welcome space to lose yourself in a good book for hours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viennese coffeehouses supposedly began their long and illustrious history after the 17th<\/sup>-century Siege of Vienna, when Viennese Georg Franz Kolschitzky opened the first coffeehouse with coffee beans left behind by the retreating Ottomans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, another theory states that courtier and spy Diodato was actually the first to open a coffeehouse in 1685.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever the case, these coffeehouses have since fuelled the city\u2019s intellectual and artistic denizens, providing a refuge for minds such as Freud, Klimt and Trotsky to contemplate and exchange ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, which one of these coffeehouses are the cream of the (melange) crop? Read on to find out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although they\u2019re called coffee<\/strong>houses, most actually offer a fine selection of desserts<\/strong> and light meals <\/strong>for patrons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you ask any self-respecting Viennese, then the Sachertorte or \u201cSacher chocolate cake\u201d takes top billing. Supposedly whipped up at the last minute by p\u00e2tissier Franz Sacher for the Austrian Prince Metternich, this fluffy sponge cake is topped by a simple yet tasteful chocolate layer that hides a layer of tangy apricot jam within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And where better to get a slice than the hotel-caf\u00e9 opened by Sacher\u2019s son himself?<\/p>\n\n\n

Located just opposite the Vienna State Opera, this fancy caf\u00e9 is part of the respected Sacher Hotel that\u2019s more than a century old. Inside, the red and white d\u00e9cor give it a classy and rose-tinted atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, its star attraction has to be its Sachertorte cake, which is still handmade according to the recipe handed down by Franz Sacher himself<\/a>! Make sure to savour the cake with the traditional dollop of whipped cream!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Caf\u00e9 Sacher\u2019s menu<\/a> also offers traditional coffee fare such as Sacher Melange or Kleiner Brauner along with soups, meals and even alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019re done appreciating the caf\u00e9 and decor, sit down for a wide range of Viennese delights that will fill you right up at any time of day (at least until 9pm). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few great picks are the veal schnitzel with potatoes, cranberries and salad or the minced veal meatloaf and the homemade apricot dumplings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though not an actual museum, Caf\u00e9 Museum has hosted plenty of artists whose works have graced museums, particularly those of the Art Nouveau movement such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, it\u2019s located right next to a monument and work of Klimt\u2019s – the Secession Building! Art nerds will appreciate the proximity and a chance to catch a breather. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caf\u00e9 Hawelka is almost a story of the Hawelka family itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Leopold Hawelka bought the rundown Caf\u00e9 Karl in 1939 and renamed it to Caf\u00e9 Hawelka, this family-owned coffeehouse has basically remained unchanged throughout three generations of the Hawelkas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though many of its peers have made compromises with modernity through airy interiors and minimalist d\u00e9cor, Hawelka is unflinchingly dedicated to keeping the caf\u00e9 as it has been for almost 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attracted by its conducive air, Hawelka would eventually become the hangout for the radical and experimental minds of the 1960s and 70s, which counted poets, photographers and composers among their ranks, turning it into one of the great postwar cafes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
