Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/people-walking-on-street-near-brown-and-white-concrete-building-during-daytime-i2INSSaWI4k\">zibik<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Befitting the old imperial capital, the northern Beijing-style is all about courtyards, courtyards and courtyards!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best seen in traditional <em>hutong<\/em> neighbourhoods, the style is frequently seen in the <em>shiheyuan<\/em> or \u201cfour courtyard\u201d layout consisting of four buildings centred around a large courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fengshui elements feature heavily in this style, such as symmetrically placed buildings on the four cardinal directions. Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:The_Chen_Clan%27s_Academy.jpg\">David Chen<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also known as Cantonese style, the Lingnan style is endemic to the far southern Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, where a subtropical climate prevails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a need to beat the heat, various unique innovations such as large pools, cooler and water-absorbent clay \u201cgreen bricks\u201d and narrow, draft-promoting \u201ccold alleys\u201d are commonly used here. Sometimes accompanying these flashy roofs are even flashier porcelain carvings of dragons, phoenixes and deities.
