Boshu being the classical name of southern Chiba &#8211; would be used not just in furnaces and braziers, but also as foundations and structures in places such as Yokohama, Odaiba and the Imperial Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Nokogiri has many hiking trails popular for their blend of manmade and natural attractions as well as a ropeway that allows for easy access to the peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you go off hiking though, make sure to check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/survive-winter-japan-malaysian\/\">Japanese Winter Survival Guide \u2013 Malaysian-Style<\/a> as well as our <a href=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/winter-clothes-layering-a-quick-guide-for-malaysians\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11634\">winter layering guide<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hiking Tips (Winter)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the weather frequently. Even clear days can quickly become overcast or worse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even on clear days, make sure to dress warmly with windbreakers, fleece and sweat-wicking inners. More details on winter layering <a href=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/winter-clothes-layering-a-quick-guide-for-malaysians\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring some extra water. The dry winds and sweating can leave you dehydrated very quickly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring some snacks or even a meal. Outside the ropeway and temple, there aren\u2019t any stores on the mountain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear proper hiking shoes or at least a sturdy pair of sneakers to avoid slipping on some of the rough paths and steep sections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Although it usually doesn&#8217;t snow on Mount Nokogiri, <a href=\"https:\/\/matatabinomori.net\/media\/web-writing\/chiba_tokyowanferry_nokogiriyama02\/\">it can happen<\/a> in late winter. The cable car station is a 15 min walk from Hama-Kanaya Station. After acclimatizing to the winter weather, I felt it was time to challenge Nokogiri. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weather forecast called for clear skies with some clouds in the afternoon, with temperatures around 10 degrees or lower \u2013 which thankfully turned out to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ minutes before it embarked, avoiding a one-hour wait for the next ferry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In retrospect, setting off earlier around 7 would\u2019ve been better, but that\u2019s life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls watched the chaotic white churn taper off into a sharp trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saying goodbye to the last few buoys and isles, the ferry sped up, whipping the deck with class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out in the open sea, a radiant sun looked out over an endless, shimmering sheet of blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Squinting my eyes against wild winds and the solar glare, I looked out into the unfathomable vastness of this small slice of the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: getting my fill of the Pacific, I went down into the seating decks for a better view of the approach to <strong>Kanaya<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting from a speck in the distance before transforming into an impressive fa\u00e7ade, the port of Kanaya and Mount Nokogiri above extended their welcome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding the cross a parking lot and then some neighbourhoods to reach the trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way is poorly marked from the ferry terminal, but follow the coastal road Convenience Store<\/strong> (\u592a\u7530\u5c4b\u5546\u5e97), cross the river and turn left at the bright red <strong>Sasou Butcher Shop<\/strong> (\u7b39\u751f\u7cbe\u8089\u5e97). By now, you should already see green signs leading you towards the trail. In fact, these early teams were made up of mostly women!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, the trail used and carved by these workers was named after them \u2013 <em>shariki<\/em> (cart pusher).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Mount-Nokogiri-Deer.webm\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right before I entered a dimly lit forest, I even managed to spot a pair of deer! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I almost missed them due to their muddy coat blending into the hill but there they were &#8211; munching on some grass while eyeing me warily whenever I made the slightest move or sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div\n\t\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"wp-block-uagb-image-gallery uagb-block-b8291c08 forest. With the elevation sharply ascending, I took a quick breath next to some stone slabs. Abandoned just before the final stop, the slabs stood silently as a thick coat of moss slowly reclaimed them for Mother Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Quick class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten minutes off to the side of the main Shariki-Michi trail is the odd-sounding <strong>Nekochoba<\/strong> (\u732b\u4e01\u5834) or Cat Quarry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Occupying a small outcropping facing the hills, this former quarry has been spruced up with some benches and a cute heart-shaped art installation created by Yoshiro Benjamin-Iida, a Chiba architect famed for their use of natural materials (<a href=\"https:\/\/yoshirobenjamin.wixsite.com\/site\">Yoshiro\u2019s Website<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But why cats?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" the cut stone wall and its overhang and you\u2019ll know exactly why \u2013 multiple chisel and cut marks that look very similar to claw marks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But more importantly, hiding discreetly in a corner &#8211; the tiny carving of a cat playing with a ball! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It blended so well with the stone itself, I only noticed \u201csaw teeth\u201d of Mount Nokogiri will be a stunning manmade crevice carved into the rock face. It\u2019s almost tempting to spin a tale about how they were created by otherworldly means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But no, they were all carved by industrious, clever and ordinary <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Nokogiri is made up of discrete diagonal geological layers formed by millions of years of erosion. Over many years, this resulted in Mount Nokogiri&#8217;s smooth cliffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After slicing out one half of the mountain, they would then proceed to search for and target particular stone veins by cutting into the cliffs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prevent collapses, the stair-shaped &#8220;roofs&#8221; &#8211; carved out from probing and mining &#8211; were left alone. Meanwhile, the stonemasons kept mining precious veins both deeper and diagonally. Over time, both of these methods resulted in the famous overhangs and caves we see today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Quarry-Faces.webm\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although most portions of the deeper Kannon and Fukinuke edifice caves are closed off for safety reasons, you can still catch a glimpse into their cavernous innards, sometimes filled with stones, flooded by rainwater or simply overgrown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, you can still touch the smooth walls further out and feel the cool (cold!) rock and expert stonework with your own bare hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Can&#8217;t get enough of mountains? Despite the chilly winter air, there was still plenty of foliage around, even red autumn ones!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But my joy quickly turned to despair as I slowly inched up Nokogiri. Already barebones steps became unrecognizable blobs while increasingly sharp and terrifying ascents marked the way to the viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time I made it, I was already sweating buckets, my hands half-numb from grabbing onto freezing metal railings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then, what I saw made it all worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls by a breathtaking vista that began from the wild hills of Chiba, dipped into the quaint towns coastal towns and plunged into the sunlit bosom of the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The positively radiant sea acted as a giant mirror, reflecting the blue sky back towards the heavens and its armada of scattered I considered trying for the actual summit further up, but limited winter daylight, fatigue and mixed reviews of the place discouraged me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passing by the cliff quarries again, I made a detour into the <strong>Stone Stage Quarry <\/strong>(\u5ca9\u821e\u53f0), a massive former worksite with multiple levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally operated by the family-owned company Yoshike Shiten, you can still see their name emblazoned across a tall granite face at the site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They extracted some of the last Boshu Stone from Nokogiri up until 1985, when falling demand and environmental concerns closed this chapter of Kanaya On a very of top of the cliffs, a rocky point juts out of the ridge like a thumb. Protected by railings, you might even see a tiny silhouette of a person up top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, of course, is arguably <strong>the<\/strong> selfie spot to visit on Mount Nokogiri \u2013 <strong>Jigoku Nozoki <\/strong>(\u5730\u7344\u306e\u305e\u304d) or &#8220;View into Hell&#8221;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I quickly picked up the pace, painfully aware of the approaching winter sunset at 4pm. to spare, which I gladly used to admire the setting sun dipping slowly into the ocean from the top deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls poster=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_20241227_162815-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/1000journey.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Kanaya-Exit-2.webm\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the ferry\u2019s engines roared to life, the white clouds from before had begun to darken considerably, not just from the fading light. Reaching towards the light, the menacing clouds seemed to stir the seas and the very air itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amidst worsening weather, I felt a sense of unease as the ferry exited the port. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midway through the return voyage, my fears were partly realized. Taking the packed bus back to Kurihama, I ended my Mount Nokogiri adventure with a bowl of savory chashu ramen at a standing-only place called <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/sxX4dWmjfXtXHyVDA\">Ekimenya<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you find yourself with a day to spare in Tokyo and yearn for the outdoors, I highly recommend taking a shot at Mount Nokogiri.
