You\u2019ve probably seen them before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A huge thundering mass of both black and striped bovines crashing into massive rivers as one, occasionally getting picked off by opportunistic crocodiles in the water or lurking lions on the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the Great Migration of the Serengeti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what is this grand opera of life and why does it happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Great Migration?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Great Migration is an annual migration of wildebeest within the Serengeti, a region of savannah grassland located within the borders of Tanzania and Kenya in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from the Southern Serengeti in Tanzania during the calving season, it climaxes in the north in Kenya\u2019s Maasai Mara national park, where the wildebeest make their iconic river crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite compromising mostly of wildebeest, a colourful variety of fellow herbivores like gazelle and zebras also tag along for this grand commute. Overall, an estimated 1.5 million wildebeests, 400,000 zebras and 300,000 gazelles are involved in this grand spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, not far behind are the predators that stalk weak and young wildebeest such as hyenas, lions and crocodiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with most migrations, the Serengeti\u2019s Great Migration occurs because of food and water<\/strong>, or specifically the nutrient-rich grass along with the rains that encourage their growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the calving season from January to March<\/strong>, newborn wildebeest in the south bulk up from the abundant grass grown by the wet season rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as the dry season sets in from April to June<\/strong>, the entire herd starts to move northwards in search of greener pastures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This eventually climaxes in July-August<\/strong> when massive herds start to enter the Maasai Mara. This is when the famous river crossings occur. Eventually, they settle down for a few months, grazing on the nature\u2019s bounty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the short rains begin in the south again in October-November<\/strong>, the herd then moves back to begin the calving season and the entire cycle once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, with Mother Nature being unpredictable and global warming throwing a wrench into her plans, these months and dates can vary wildly from year to year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides being a symbol of East Africa\u2019s rich biodiversity, the Great Migration is also Mother Nature\u2019s way of balancing herself so to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the rains and grass are plentiful, the wildebeest feast and reproduce. But as the rains stop and the grasses deplete, the wildebeest move north to graze. This reduces the chance of overgrazing and doing irreparable damage to the local ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Migration is also a prime opportunity to witness interactions between the diverse species of the Serengeti, particularly between prey and predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lions, hyenas and crocodiles lie in wait for young and sick wildebeest, zebras and gazelles to be separated from the massive, intimidating herd before striking, often with shocking ferocity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dance of life and death has fascinated countless researchers as well as tourists, who head out into African nature reserves to witness this spectacle with their own eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These tourists and the billons they spend on transport, accommodation and local products is a major contributor to the Kenyan and Tanzanian ecotourism economies, helping to better the quality of life of the local Maasai people as well as creating livelihoods for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Kenya, Malaysians will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit. As for Tanzania, a visa will be required to enter for Malaysians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi are available, but most flights usually stop at regional airports in the Gulf before connecting to Nairobi. Tanzania is a similar story, but with much fewer direct flights from Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although self-drive safari tours are technically doable, due to the remote and unfamiliar locations of the safari parks along with the massive red tape and planning involved, it\u2019s usually recommended to book a tour through a local travel agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
